Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. a1/a2/a3 and Ausf. b were a pre-production series of Panzer II tanks, produced in small number in 1936 and 37. These early versions were used to test the drive train and engine capabilities, before the mass production of Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. A started. There were 75 tanks of the various "a" versions produced. a1/a2/a3 versions were used in combat during the invasion of Poland in 1939 and France in 1940. After that they were reassigned to police and training units. It's likely that some of these tanks were also used in the Spanish Civil War.
